What is the Gen2 Project?
In 2018 the Gen2 Children’s and Youth Team for the Diocese of Peterborough successfully bid for an investment of over £1m from the Strategic Development Fund (SDF) from the Church Commissioners (Central Church of England Funding).
You may be wondering where this money is going and who will benefit…
This webpage will give background information on the project, plus ongoing and regularly updating news, evolving stories and lessons learnt so far.
A Summary of the Gen2 Project
The money from the Strategic Development Fund is being invested over six years in high-quality training and employment of eight children’s and youth missioners to develop patterns of innovative and effective outreach and discipleship amongst young people, with a view to replicating this elsewhere. The Diocese’s successful Youth Ministry Xpect Apprenticeship scheme is being developed from a one year into a five-year training and employment programme. The scope of the new Project is also being expanded to include ministry with children and families, and an emphasis on intergenerational ministry.
Apprentices will progress into an undergraduate training course lasting up to three years, and will then be employed full-time. The missioners will be parish-based but will also have a Deanery-wide role and will work closely with the Gen2 Youth and Children’s Team.
The training and employment of the eight Missioners will take place with staggered starts. Currently we have two Missioners in training (currently Year 1, going into Year 2 in Sept), two about to start their courses in September (beginning Year 1 in Sept), one all set to start as an Apprentice (Year Zero) and one who will hopefully be starting training (Year 1) in Sept 2020.

The Gen2 Project sits within a wider vision to change the culture of our Diocese to see children’s and Youth ministry as a Golden Thread running through all we do; from the decisions made by senior staff, to daily activities in our parish churches, from PCC’s to occasional offices…
